A Starry night in Houston
A Starry Night in Houston is a painting that is inspired by Houston’s contribution and affiliation with space and technology. Houston is affectionately called “Space City.” A Starry Night in Houston combines Houston’s Space City symbolism with AVM’s iconic color-filled designs.
“Many times I paint abstract works intuitively without creating any reference to form or figurative imagery within the work. Usually what emerges are detailed and colorful abstractions that serve wonderfully as works that could be enjoyed close up and afar. But here, I wanted to expound on my style to give the viewer clear symbols to identify as their eyes travel around and about the painting.”
AVM’s abstract designs are known for their vibrant colors and interwoven details, creating depth and layers that leave the audience staring for hours, always discovering something new and hidden within plain sight. In A Starry Night in Houston, AVM maintains her signature style but takes it a step further by adding images of the NASA logo, space photography of the moon and atmosphere, rocket and space station into the work. These images are intertwined within and throughout the entire painting; the images and abstractions unified yet, identifiable only by the contrast of colors.
“I wanted the symbols to stand out, but with subtlety. I wanted the focus of the painting to be of its whole, viewed and appreciated in its entirety; with the gradual discovery and appreciation of the symbols located in each quadrant. I want the images to be apparent but understated. The statement is in the grand connectedness of the entire piece, unified by the inherent flow of the design all throughout the background and foreground. This flow represents the ether, the substance, the invisible molecules that connects us all, making us one. The Universe.”
